12 Players Advance to 122nd Amateur Championship Following Quail Brook Qualifier
SOMERSET, N.J. - Qualifying for the 122nd New Jersey Amateur Championship presented by Provident Bank has concluded at Quail Brook Golf Course and 12 players have advanced to the major championship, which will be contested at Manasquan River Golf Club on July 10-12.
James Arbes earned medalist honors on Saturday, carding a 2-under par 70 on the 6,577-yard course. Arbes compiled a steady round, highlighted by three birdies.
“I honestly hit the ball great,” Arbes said. “18 was the only green I missed in regulation, so I didn't putt very well, but I didn't really need to.”
Competing in the Mid-Amateur next week at Deal Golf & Country Club, Arbes anticipates his consistent play will carry on over the next few weeks.
"I have been playing great, so hoping I carry it over and try to do some damage in the actual event.”
Brooks Sanidas of Cherry Valley Country Club had a roller coaster of a round. After starting on No. 10 and a 4-over par 40, the 17-year-old turned around on the front nine to shoot a 3-under, highlighted by an eagle on No. 6, a birdie on No. 7 and a hole-in-one on No. 8. He closed out his round with a par on No. 9 to narrowly make the qualify.
“My thought process was I did not think I was going make it, so I just wanted to stay there, I didn’t want to blow up or anything,” Sanidas recalled joyfully. “Then it just happened that I had a three-foot eagle putt on that par 5 then I followed that up with the birdie and then the hole in one, of course. That's crazy. That's never happened to me.”
There are three remaining qualifiers for the championship. William Celiberti of Arcola Country Club will look to defend his title at the shore gem in July.
